There are certain things we treasure because they belonged to the generations before us.
An old photograph.
Granddad's watch.
Grandmother's recipe.
Maybe an old Bible with handwritten notes filling the margins.
Those things can become precious reminders of where we came from.
But there is one thing our grandparents cannot hand down to us:
salvation.
You can inherit Grandma's Bible.
You cannot inherit Grandma's relationship with Jesus.
You can inherit your grandfather's name.
You cannot inherit his faith.
Jesus told Nicodemus:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3, ESV
Every generation must personally encounter Christ.
That truth gives grandparents an incredible responsibility—and an incredible opportunity.
Our grandchildren need more from us than religious traditions.
They need to see what Jesus looks like in a human life.
They need to see Grandpa apologize when he's wrong.
They need to hear Grandma pray when life becomes frightening.
They need to watch us forgive someone who hurt us.
They need to see us open the Bible because we actually want to hear from God—not merely because Sunday School starts in ten minutes.
They need to discover that our Christianity follows us home from church.
One of the greatest gifts you can give your grandchildren is allowing them to watch Jesus matter to you.
Not perfection.
Authenticity.
Let them see that when you fail, you repent.
Let them see that when you're afraid, you pray.
Let them see that when you're hurt, you choose forgiveness.
Let them see generosity.
Let them hear gratitude.
Let them watch you worship.
Let them know that Jesus isn't merely part of your Sunday schedule.
He is Lord of your life.
And if you have a child or grandchild who has wandered from God, don't give up.
You may look at their life and wonder if anything you taught them remains.
Keep praying.
Keep loving.
Keep speaking truth with grace.
Keep living Christ before them.
Remember what God promised:
“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.”
— Ezekiel 36:26, ESV
You cannot change somebody's heart.
Neither can I.
But God can.
The Holy Spirit can reach places you cannot reach.
He can speak when they won't listen to you.
He can bring circumstances into their lives you could never arrange.
He can take a heart that seems completely closed and awaken it to the gospel.
So grandparents, don't underestimate the ministry God has given you.
Your greatest legacy won't ultimately be the house you leave behind, the money in an account, or the possessions divided among the family.
Your greatest legacy is a life that says:
“Jesus Christ is real. I have walked with Him. I have trusted Him. I have failed Him, and He has forgiven me. And after all these years, I can tell you—He is faithful.”
Give your grandchildren memories.
Give them stories.
Give them hugs.
Give them time.
But above everything else, give them a living example of what it looks like to follow Jesus.
Because long after you're gone, they may still remember watching you walk with Him.
